Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone Galaxy maintained the top spot in brand value among the top 100 firms in 2016, a market research firm said Sunday.

According to Brandstock’s list of the leading 100 brands for this year in South Korea, Samsung’s Galaxy ranked No. 1 for the sixth consecutive year, despite its global recall and suspension of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to risks of explosion.

Retail store E-mart and South Korea’s largest mobile messaging application KakaoTalk came in at second and third, respectively.

Genesis, a luxury brand under South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor, climbed the ladder the most this year, with its name as the most favored brand in the automobile category and ranking No. 31 overall among 100 brands.

Backed by the popularity of Google’s artificial intelligence program AlphaGo, Google Korea came in at No. 14, up 20 spots from 2015, data by Brandstock showed.

Affiliates of South Korea’s fifth-largest conglomerate Lotte Group slid from among the top ranks, largely due to an ongoing investigation by the prosecution over management irregularities.

Meanwhile, a significant change in trends was seen in brand value rankings over the past decade, the firm said.

MOST -- mobile, online shopping, social media and internet technology-related firms -- occupied the top spots this year, while traditionally preferred CAFE -- car, apartment, foreign and e-business companies -- have dropped in value since 2006, it said.

During the period, PC-based online platforms, including South Korea’s once most preferred social media service Cyworld, online messengers NateOn and MSN Messenger, gradually gave way to brands such as KakaoTalk, Facebook and Twitter.

According to Brandstock, online shopping brands such as e-commerce operators Coupang and 11 Street are expanding their presence at a fast pace.

Apartment brand Raemian ranked No. 57 this year, down some 20 spots from No. 26 in 2006, while Daewoo E&C’s Prugio, GS E&C’s Xi and a number of apartment brands dropped off the list.

Once highly favored local branches of foreign brands Nike and Coca-Cola that had ranked No. 11 and No. 18, respectively, in 2006 did not make this year’s list.
