PM vows stern action against truck, railroad strikes

Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn said Tuesday the government will deal sternly with all laws broken by truckers and railroad workers currently engaged in strikes, urging them to return to work.

"The strikes by unionized railroad workers and cargo truck drivers are hindering the transport of critical export and import cargo, emerging as a heavy burden on the national economy and the people's livelihood," Hwang said during a Cabinet meeting.

Unionized railroad workers have been on strike for the 22nd day as of Tuesday, protesting against the government's plan to adopt a performance-based pay system. It is part of the Park Geun-hye administration's efforts to boost labor flexibility to create more jobs, especially for the younger generation.

Local truckers are also staging a protest against the government's revised policy on the development of the cargo industry, which truckers claim will result in excessive competition in the market.

The prime minister asked the related ministries to come up with special measures to minimize the negative impacts of the strikes. (Yonhap)
