S-Oil offers scholarship for children of deceased firefighters

Seventy children of firefighters who died while on duty received a total of 210 million won ($187,869) in scholarship funds from Korea’s third-largest oil refiner S-Oil to support their academic studies, the company said Wednesday.

This year the refiner delivered 3 million won ($2,711) to each recipient at the Yeongdeungpo Fire Station in Seoul, as part of its annual scholarship program for children of fallen firefighters.

“It is fulfilling to see kids who were in elementary school when we began the program proceed to university and workplace,” said S-Oil president Kim Dong-cheoul.

Recipients receive the scholarship every year until they graduate university or college, the company‘s spokesperson explained.

According to S-Oil, it started the program in 2006 and has funded a combined total of some 3 billion won ($2.7 million) for 1,048 recipients up until this year.
