Quantum dots made from semiconductor materials are the display technology Samsung is pushing to counter its rival LG Electronics’ organic light-emitting diode TV panels. 

Samsung said each monitor undergoes factory calibration in order to amplify the details in advanced gaming titles. This treatment includes optimization of various settings, including black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management, enabling gamers to enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game.

“As the gaming market continues to enjoy rapid worldwide growth, gamers expect advanced display technologies that can bring out the latest video game features and optimize the gameplay experience,” said Kim Seog-gi, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics’ visual display business division. 

“By enhancing our pioneering curved gaming monitors with quantum dot technology, our displays further surround players and make them feel as if they are part of the game,” he added.

Samsung Electronics’ local rival LG Electronics also plans to demonstrate its High Dynamic Range technology in partnership with a number of broadcasters and content providers, LG said Monday.

The demonstration is designed to offer visitors the chance to experience HDR content on LG OLED TVs. Visitors will be able to experience content using both Dolby HDR and HDR10, as well as Hybrid Log Gamma technology, the company said.

LG said it would hold several HDR demonstrations at the event, which involves the transmission of HLG content utilizing ASTRA’s satellite network and BBC terrestrial broadcasting system. HLG is a new HDR standard jointly developed by BBC and NHK to enable broadcasters to send HDR transmissions over cable and to provide streaming live content.

LG will also demonstrate HDR technology combining High Frame Rate with HLG content. The tech firm will team up with UK public broadcaster BBC and the European Broadcasting Union to demonstrate HFR HLG content. HFR is a new technology that enhances the quality of ultra-high definition images by delivering up to 100 or 120 frames per second. The enhanced frame rate translates to smoother, more realistic onscreen movements, the company said.

“With technological flexibility, LG OLED TVs offer the most advanced HDR capabilities on the market today, as well as into the future,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company.

“Future HDR technology will allow a wider range of consumers to experience rich HDR content regardless of the format employed,” Kwon added.
