Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and North Gyeongsang Province are hosting the second General Assembly of the Silk Road Universities Network from Monday to Friday next week.

Launched in August last year, the network is an alliance of universities in countries located along the routes of the Silk Road to foster academic and cultural exchanges. It aims to promote peace and prosperity between east and west.

The event will be held under the theme “mutual understanding and respect along the Silk Road,” with discussions covering issues such as respecting diversity in political disposition, religion, race and culture.

On the sidelines, there will be an exhibition of winning photos from the network’s recent contest.

The opening ceremony will be attended by some 85 guests from 35 universities across 18 countries. The five-day event will be held both on the campus of HUFS and Andong in North Gyeongsang Province.

“Through hosting the (event), as part of the province’s Korea Silk Road project, it is hoped that the contribution of Korea and North Gyeongsang Province will be further marked in opening the new Silk Road of the 21st century,” said North Gyeongsang Province Gov. Kim Kwan-yong.

SUN consists of three core bodies: the International Association for Silk-road Studies, the United Presidents of SUN and the United Students of SUN.
