South Korea will hold a food fair in the Chinese city of Chengdu later this week to promote the country's agricultural products and foodstuffs in the neighboring country, the ministry here said Wednesday.

The 2016 Chengdu K-Food Fair will kick off on Thursday and run through Wednesday, with 28 South Korean food and dairy firms to present their products, according to the Ministry Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

During the four-day event, South Korean firms including Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co. will open booths to exhibit their food products like kimchi, chicken soup, ginseng and various confectioneries.

There will be also consultation sessions for companies to have face-to-face meetings with 50 Chinese buyers and retailers and reach export deals, while Chinese visitors will experience free tasting events and small K-pop concerts at the fair.

The Chengdu event is the second of its kind, following the previous one in Xian in June, that the South Korean government has organized to help the local food industry prop up exports to China and other Asian countries. The next fair is scheduled to be held in Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam in September.

Exports of South Korean agricultural products to the world's second-largest economy have been on a steady rise in recent years.

Some US$1 billion won worth of South Korean food was sold in China last year, with the figure projected to rise to $1.4 billion this year. (Yonhap)
