[THE INVESTOR] Kolon Industries, the chemical and textile unit of Kolon Group, said on Aug. 2 it will invest about 90 billion won (US$81 million) in producing colorless polyimide, a key material for “bendable” smartphones and other flexible mobile devices.

The company said it aims to complete the production line at its plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, by the first quarter of 2018.

Kolon is the first to produce the new material, while there are several others who have the technology.

Replacing the current glass-based film, colorless polyimide boasts better durability and flexibility.

Key handset makers such as Samsung and LG have already unveiled prototypes of their futuristic bendable smartphones. The mass-production models are expected to be launched in 2018.

Kolon aims to see an annual more than 20 billion in the material production from 2018.
