The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office on Wednesday decided to dismiss a chief prosecutor identified by his surname Kim, after confirming multiple occasions of verbal and physical abuse against his subordinate prosecutor who committed suicide in May.

Upon internal probe, they concluded that one of the biggest causes of the prosecutor’s suicide was Kim’s harassment and decided to seek the highest level of discipline possible. This is the first dismissal of a prosecutor for abusing a subordinate. The decision will be handed over to the Justice Ministry for final approval.

The prosecutor, aged 33, was found hanging at his home, with a note that pointed to work-related stress and pressure. Testimonies by the deceased’s friends and acquaintances said that he had often talked to them about his superior who continuously abused him.

When dismissed, the chief prosecutor will not be allowed to open a law practice or assume a public post for the next three years. His pension will also be slashed by 25 percent.
