Art house filmmaker Kim Ki-duk has received 250 million yuan ($37.4 million) in investment from a Chinese production company for his upcoming film “Who is God,” according to an industry insider Friday.

A war epic set in an ancient Asian kingdom, “Who is God” has been a work in progress since even before the release of Kim’s award-winning film “Pieta,” which was met with controversy in Korea due to its violent and graphic nature.

Kim’s biggest budget film to date, the upcoming movie will star an all-Chinese cast, including singer-actress Liu Yifei.

Best known for his internationally-acclaimed 2003 production “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring,” Kim had previously indicated that he may take a hiatus from the Korean film industry.

“I have shot about 20 films in Korea. I think I’ve told all the stories I’ve wanted to tell in Korea,” said the filmmaker at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival.

Notorious for his iconoclastic taste, Kim told reporters at the press conference for “Who is God” in Beijing last September that he is “willing to alter the content of the film for the Chinese audience.”
