A leader of a Saenuri Party faction loyal to President Park Geun-hye on Wednesday said he won't run in the ruling party's leadership election slated for August, urging an end to relentless factional feuds.

Rep. Choi Kyung-hwan, a former finance minister, also pledged to dedicate himself to fostering unity in the party and securing the party's win in the presidential election slated for December next year.

"For the Park Geun-hye administration and Saenuri Party to regain public trust, I will serve as a rank-and-file lawmaker," Choi said at a press conference. "I urge (the party) to stop different factions from pointing their fingers at each other and hating each other."

The group of lawmakers close to the president, called the pro-Park faction, has demanded that Choi join the leadership election, scheduled for Aug. 9.

Since the party's preceding leadership resigned over an election debacle in the April 13 parliamentary polls, the party has been led by an interim leadership committee.

With about a month left before the leadership election, a series of senior party bigwigs have expressed their intention to join the race. Among them are Lee Ju-young, a pro-Park lawmaker, and Kim Yong-tae, part of a faction that is not close to President Park.

Suh Chung-won, an eight-term lawmaker close to the president, has also been mentioned as a likely candidate, although he has been reluctant to enter the race.

Rep. Lee Jung-hyun, President Park's former chief publicity secretary and confidant, said he would declare his bid to join the leadership race on Thursday. (Yonhap)
