The ruling Saenuri Party on Monday appointed Rep. Park Myung-jae as the new secretary-general of its interim leadership as part of efforts to defuse factional tensions and start due preparations for the party's leadership election slated for August.
Park replaces Kweon Seong-dong, who has stepped aside after clashing with party lawmakers loyal to President Park Geun-hye over a decision to reaccept a group of independent lawmakers who defected from the party after failing to clinch nominations for the April 13 parliamentary polls.
"Park will steer the party well when the party faces difficulties," Kim Hee-ok, the party's interim leader, said during a meeting with senior party officials.
The lawmaker is known to maintain good relations with both major factions -- one that is pro-President Park and the other that's not. He served as minister of public administration and security from 2006 and 2008.
Meanwhile, Rep. Kim Tae-heum, the party's first vice secretary-general, offered to resign.
The resignation of Kim, a pro-President Park lawmaker, came as Kweon, the former secretary-general, had pressured him to step down.
Kim said he would quit as he does not want to pose any hurdles to the party's preparations for the leadership vote. (Yonhap)
