The next commander of the 28,000-strong United States forces stationed in South Korea will officially take office this week, U.S. Forces Korea said Friday.

In a change of command ceremony to be held at USFK's Yongsan garrison in central Seoul on Saturday, Gen. Vincent Brooks will take over from outgoing USFK commander Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, according to the USFK.

Brooks, currently the commanding general of the U.S. Army Pacific, graduated from West Point in 1980 and served with United States Forces Korea in the 1980s.

Outgoing commander Scaparrotti will assume his new position as commander of United States European Command, or EUCOM, after departing his current post which he assumed in October 2013. (Yonhap)
