Hanwha Group has made progress in instilling traditional values to children through its culture and arts education project Hanwha Art Plus, group officials said Thursday.

Hanwha Art Plus is a cooperative project being pushed by the conglomerate and the Korea Mecenat Association, a non-profit agency that supports corporate encouragement of the arts. It started out in 2009 as a social contribution project to support arts education with a focus on tradition.

Elementary students learn how to play the gayageum, a traditional Korean stringed instrument, through Hanwha Group’s arts education project Hanwha Art Plus on April 21, at Namsan Gugakdang in Seoul. Every year, around 4,000 Hanwha employees volunteer to help teach traditional instruments, opera, dance, calligraphy and painting to 400 children.

According to a survey by the Korea Mecenat Association last year, participants in Hanwha Art Plus programs, including volunteers, arts instructors, and children showed higher interest in the traditional arts, group officials said.

Recognized for its efforts, Hanwha Art Plus received the Korea Mecenat Association’s grand prize in 2011 and the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Happiness Sharing Award in 2014.
