NEW YORK (AP) -- The Whitney Museum of American Art has honored cosmetics tycoon Leonard Lauder for his significant contributions to its collection.

The inaugural Whitney Collection Award was presented to Lauder at a dinner in his honor Tuesday night.

Lauder is a son of Estee Lauder. He was a trustee of the museum for many years and is now its chairman emeritus.

The museum announced it was also honoring Lauder by naming its Renzo Piano-designed building in lower Manhattan the Leonard A. Lauder Building.

The museum moved into the building in the Meatpacking District last May.

It says Lauder has helped the institution acquire 948 works of art since 1975, including 760 he gifted personally. They include important works by Jasper Johns, Louise Nevelson, Mark Rothko and many others.
