‘Descendants of the Sun’ hits U.S.

KBS2’s hit TV drama “Descendants of the Sun” has become the most-searched recent TV series on U.S.-based global video-streaming site Viki, the service said Wednesday.

The 16-episode drama series, set against the backdrop of military operations in a fictional country, stars actor Song Joong-ki and actress Song Hye-kyo. It has been shown exclusively by Viki in the U.S. for the past four weeks.

The TV drama’s first eight episodes have been uploaded on the platform and it became the most-searched of the world’s 50 latest TV series available on the site, earning 9.7 out of 10 in viewer ratings based on 2,492 reviews, Viki said.

Viki provides TV shows for free with ads, but it charges a monthly subscription fee of $3.99 for ad-free service. “Descendants of the Sun” is only available for paid subscribers for two weeks following each episode’s release.

Meanwhile, the hit TV drama, which began airing on Feb. 24 in both Korea and China, will also run on Japanese cable channel Elsei Gekijou starting June.
