A former presidential secretary who had stepped down amid accusations of leaking a classified document joined the opposition camp on Tuesday.

“I have seen hope in the party’s recent struggle to correct its past errors and renew itself into a capable economic-driven party,” said Cho Eung-cheon, announcing his entry into The Minjoo Party of Korea.

He also gave biting advice to his new party, saying that the Minjoo Party should come up with real measures to improve the people’s lives, instead of blaming the administration without alternative ideas.

Cho had headed the division of the presidential office in charge of discipline in the civil service. A leaked report from his department stated that former presidential aide Chung Yoon-hoi covertly worked with other top-level officials to meddle in state affairs, causing a stir in 2014.

He was acquitted of the charges in October.
