Hyundai, Honda, Bentley, Porsche, FCA, Volvo will recall 4,897 cars and motorcycles sold in South Korea for safety-related mechanical defects, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Monday.

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's No. 1 carmaker, confirmed it found problems with its differential gearbox in the Genesis Coupe that can cause excessive noise and even lead to the drive axle slipping from its proper position, the ministry said.

The 446 cars affected were made between Dec. 28, 2011, and April 6 of this year, with Hyundai to carry out repairs from Monday onward.

The ministry said FCA Korea, which imports the Jeep Cherokee, found problems with the power tailgate caused by faulty electrical wiring. This problem can lead to a short circuit and even a fire.

In addition, problems were found in the air conditioning hose and main fuse boxes of the Jeep vehicles and Chrysler 200 sedans that require repairs. The defects can lead to fire and the ignition turning off while the car is being driven,

The four Chrysler 200 with the fuse problem were made on Aug.

29, 2014, while the 164 Cherokees with the hose issue were assembled between Oct. 12, 2014, and June 12, 2015. The 1,954 Cherokees with the tailgate malfunction rolled off assembly lines between Oct. 29, 2014, and Feb. 10, 2015.

In regards to Bentley, a total of 528 cars covering 10 vehicle models, including the Flying Spur sedan, had issues with the battery cable wiring that can also lead to fires and faulty ignitions.

Cars made between Sept. 5, 2012, and Dec. 10, 2014, are affected.

Concerns of engine fires and gas leaks due to substandard fuel feed hoses affected 389 Macan and Macan S vehicles made by Porsche.

The German carmaker said the cars needing repairs were made between Jan. 24, 2014, and Oct. 27 of this year. Volvo said four S60s had defective crank shaft issues that can cause the ignition to turn off.

The sudden loss of power while the car is on the road can make it hard for the driver to control the vehicle and lead to a crash.

The small number of S60s were produced between Aug. 28 and Sept. 29, 2015.

Honda, meanwhile, said 1,407 of its GL1800 and GL1800B motorbikes were discovered to have defective brake master cylinders, which prevented disc brakes from disengaging. This can cause a spike in frictional heat and even lead to a fire. The bikes were all made between July 24, 2001, and Aug. 6 of this year.

Honda, Volvo, Porsche, Bentley and FCA all said they will offer repairs starting Tuesday. (Yonhap)
