South Korean children and infants aged 5 and younger consume a lot more sugar than those in other age groups, according to a recent government survey.

According to the 2015 report released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, babies aged between 1 and 2 years took the highest level of daily food energy from sugar, at 19.3 percent, among all age groups.

Children aged 3 to 5 consumed the second-highest level of sugar at 16.4 percent, followed by those aged 6 to 11 at 13.9 percent, adults aged 19 to 29 at 13.6 percent and youth aged 12 to 18 at 13 percent.

Health authorities recommend not ingesting sugar for more than 20 percent of daily calories.

Added sugar should account for less than 10 percent of daily calories, they said.

All Korean age groups consumed sugar within the recommended criteria, though the ministry expressed concerns over children’s higher levels of sugar intake, which can lead to obesity, diabetes and adult diseases.
