The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. said Thursday that it has secured a US$60 million power distribution network deal in the Dominican Republic.

The utility company said the work, which is the single largest overseas distribution network deal it has won so far, involves replacing old power distribution infrastructure and setting up new networks that can upgrade the island nation's overall power system.

The work to be completed in 2017 involves placing some 14,000 electric utility poles and sending power over a distance of 870 kilometers, the company said.

Under the deal inked on Tuesday, KEPCO will be in charge of all aspects of the work from the design, purchase of materials and actual construction.

Securing the latest deal was helped by an earlier $58 million power distribution network project it won on the Caribbean nation in 2011, the company said.

"The latest deal pushes up the total size of the power distribution contract won in the Dominican Republic to over $110 million," it said.

The company said it completed power distribution network projects in 23 countries so far, worth more than $170 million, and is currently engaged in construction works worth some $40 million in 13 countries, including Nigeria, Cambodia and Pakistan.

It recently won a 12 billion-won ($10.5 million) deal in India, one of the largest power distribution network markets in the world.

"At the present pace, KEPCO may be able to secure a record 100 billion won worth of deals this year," the company said.

KEPCO, meanwhile, said its latest contract can generate some 20 billion won worth of exports for South Korea small and medium-sized enterprises  that will be tasked with providing parts and other materials for the work. (Yonhap)
