South Korea's top diplomat pledged Monday to strengthen efforts to help the Middle East achieve stability.

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said South Korea has joined international efforts to defeat the Islamic State militant group at an opening ceremony of a forum meant to boost cooperation between South Korea and the Middle East.

Still, he did not elaborate on how South Korea will bring stability to the Middle East marred by conflicts for decades.

Separately, Yun said South Korea can be an optimal partner of the Middle East countries as they are seeking a transition towards a low-carbon economy ahead of the inevitable advent of a post-oil era.

South Korea believes Middle East countries' attempts to diversify their industries could present new business opportunities for its companies, especially in the fields of health care, information and communication technology and nuclear energy.

Yun also said South Korea will continue to set up additional cultural centers in the region to promote South Korean culture. (Yonhap)
