The head of South Korea's National Assembly returned home  Tuesday from a trip to Russia and Finland.

Chung Ui-hwa met with Russia's parliamentary leaders, Sergey Yevgenyevich Naryshkin and Valentina Matviyenko, as well as Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and parliamentary speaker Maria Lohela to discuss N. Korean issues.

Chung first attended a reception commemorating the 25th anniversary of South Korea-Russia diplomatic relations in Moscow on Wednesday.

Later that same day, he gave a speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on the topic of the future of South Korea-Russia relations. He noted the importance of the reunification of the Korean Peninsula for peace in the Asian Pacific region.

He also visited a Hyundai factory in St. Petersburg to discuss economic ties between the two countries.

Trade volume between South Korea and Russia reached an all-time high of US$26 billion this year. The annual personnel exchange also grew 30 percent on-year to 300,000, official data showed.

During Chung's two-day visit to Finland, he met with Finnish leaders and once again emphasized the importance of reunification.

He also met with various committees within the Finnish parliament to share policy know-how. The Scandinavian country nearly halved its suicide rate between 1990 and 2012.
