Traffic accidents hit their peak right before the day of Chuseok, data showed Thursday.

Korea Insurance Development Institute analyzed car insurance data on traffic accidents around the three-day Chuseok festival from 2012 to 2014.

The figures showed that the average number of traffic accidents on the eve of the main Chuseok holiday during that surveyed period was 3,708.

That’s 26.9 percent more car accidents than the average for an ordinary day.

Officials attributed the surge to an increase in traffic as people head home to celebrate the Korean Thanksgiving.

Data also showed that an average of 11.7 people died from traffic accidents one day before the Chuseok holidays.
