미국 국무부 "박 대통령 중국 열병식 참관 결정 존중"

미국 국무부는 26일(현지시간) 박근혜 대통 령이 다음 달 초 전승절 기념행사 참석차 중국 베이징을 방문하고 열병식을 참관하 기로 한 결정을 존중한다는 입장을 표명했다.

국무부는 이날 연합뉴스의 논평 요청에 "행사 참석은 각국의 주권적 결정사항" 이라며 "우리는 한국의 결정을 존중한다"고 밝혔다.

국무부는 또 미국 정부가 버락 오바마 대통령을 대신해 맥스 보커스 주중 미국 대사를 열병식에 보내기로 한데 대해 "보커스 대사는 오바마 대통령의 특명전권대사 "라며 "전쟁 당시 미국과 많은 아시아 국가들이 치른 희생을 영예롭게 만들고 모든 관련국들의 화해와 친선을 촉진하는 것에 미국이 중요성을 부여하고 있음을 보여주 는 것"이라고 밝혔다.

청와대는 26일 보도자료를 통해 "박 대통령은 9월3일 오전 10시~11시30분에 톈안먼(天安門)에서 개최되는 중국 전승 70주년 기념 대회에 참석하고, 이어서 12시30 분~14시 인민대회당에서 개최되는 시진핑(習近平) 국가 주석 주최 오찬 리셉션에 참 석할 예정"이라고 말했다.

이는 중국의 열병식과 오찬 리셉션에 모두 참석하겠다는 것을 공식 확인한 것이 다. (연합)

U.S. says respects S. Korea's decision to attend Chinese military parade

The United States said Wednesday it respects South Korean President Park Geun-Hye's decision to attend a massive military parade China plans to hold to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

"Participation in these events is the sovereign decision of each country. We respect the Republic of Korea's decision," a State Department spokesperson said on background in response to a Yonhap News Agency's request for comment.

The Chinese parade, set for Sept. 3, is seen as a show of force amid Beijing's increasingly assertive actions in territorial disputes with its neighbors.

In an apparent expression of unhappiness, the U.S. has decided to have its ambassador to China, Max Baucus, attend the ceremony, rather than sending a high-level official from Washington.

"Ambassador Baucus is the president's personal representative in China," the State Department official said. "His presence will signal the importance the United States attaches to honoring the sacrifices made by the United States and many Asian countries during the war and in promoting reconciliation and friendship among the countries who participated on all sides of the war."
