South Korea's international air passenger traffic dropped significantly from a year earlier in July, apparently due to the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome here, the government said Tuesday.

The number of international air passengers to and from South Korea came to 4,355,615 last month, down 15.1 percent from the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The drop was largely attributed to a cut in the number of foreign tourists and visitors to the country following the MERS outbreak.

In July, the number of passengers between the country and China tumbled 42 percent on-year, while the number of passengers to and from Japan and Southeast Asian countries also dropped 3.2 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.

The cut also follows a 12.4 percent on-year plunge in the previous month.

South Korea confirmed its first MERS case on May 20. Since then, the viral respiratory disease has infected 186 people, while 36 of them have died as of Tuesday.

Currently, there remains only one person diagnosed with the disease in the country.

Despite the ongoing effects of MERS in July, domestic air passenger traffic gained 5.3 percent on-year to some 2.28 million, marking a turnaround from a 5.5 percent on-year drop in the previous month.

"Domestic air passenger traffic grew 5.3 percent on-year as the country began to recover from the fallout of the MERS outbreak while low-cost carriers expanded their services," the ministry said.

South Korea declared a de facto end to the MERS outbreak on July 28, after no additional cases had been reported for more than three weeks. An official declaration of end to the outbreak will be made 28 days after the last remaining patient is completely cured, health officials have said.

Out of all the international passengers to and from South Korea in July, 51.7 percent of them used flights operated by the country's two largest flag carriers -- Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. Their combined market share marked a slight increase from 50.7 percent in July 2014.

The combined market share of the country's low-cost carriers, on the other hand, gained 4.6 percentage points over the cited period, reaching 15.7 percent last month. (Yonhap)
