A typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to South Korea's southwest coast Sunday, forcing mass cancellations of domestic flights linking Seoul with provincial cities.

As the Korean Peninsula came under the influence of Typhoon Chan-hom, some coastal areas of South Jeolla Province have winds up to 30 meters per second, according to the weather office.

It dumped more than 145 millimeters of rain from late Saturday till 7 a.m. Sunday on Jeju and 116 millimeters of rain in Seoguipo.

More than 59 flight services linking the capital with Yeosu on the southern coast and Jeju had been canceled as of 7:30 a.m. due to strong winds.

The cancellations came as a wind shear alert had been in place at Jeju Airport until 9 a.m. and the strong wind alert was still in effect for Yeosu, airport officials said.

They say there could be more flight cancellations later in the day so passengers need to check if their flights are available before heading to airports.

But all flights are currently operating normally at Incheon International Airport, the gateway to South Korea.

The strong winds fell trees and traffic lights in some parts of the country. (Yonhap)
