Public concern is rising across the country over an outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome that has so far infected 35 people， killed two and closed more than 500 schools. With new cases of infection being reported on a daily basis， the number of people placed under quarantine has exceeded 1，300. Fearful citizens are stocking up on face masks and hand sanitizers.
중동호흡기증후군(메르스)으로 지금까지 35명이 감염， 2명이 사망하며 500여 개 학교가 휴교하면서 전국적으로 우려가 고조되고 있다. 날마다 메르스 환자 감염 사례가 보고되고 있는 가운데 격리자 수는 1300명을 넘었다. 공포에 사로잡힌 시민들은 마스크， 손 세정제를 사재기하고 있다.
Health authorities are certainly to blame for their clumsy initial response. President Park Geun-hye called for “utmost efforts” to prevent further spread of the deadly virus in an emergency meeting of government officials and civilian experts she convened Wednesday to map out a comprehensive quarantine strategy. Park herself is criticized for having been inactive in coping with the outbreak of the disease.
분명 보건 당국은 부실 초등 대응에 대한 책임이 있다. 박근혜 대통령은 포괄적 방역 전략을 마련하기 위해 수요일에 소집한 메르스 대응 민.관 합동 긴급회의에서 메르스의 확산을 막기 위해 ‘총력`을 기울일 것을 촉구했다. 박 대통령 자신도 메르스에 소극적으로 대처한 것에 대해 비판받고 있다.
While the government is mainly responsible for its negligent response， it is also important for citizens to behave responsibly. Close cooperation among the government， health experts and individuals is essential to prevent the country from being gripped by an excessive panic and the deadly virus from spreading further. To our regret， we have seen irresponsible individual behavior make the situation worse.
정부가 안이한 대응에 대해 큰 책임이 있지만 시민들이 책임감있게 행동하는 것도 중요하다. 온 나라가 과도한 공포에 사로잡히고 메르스 바이러스가 더 이상 확산되는 것을 막으려면 정부， 보건 전문가， 개인 간의 긴밀한 협력이 필수적이다. 유감스럽게도 우리는 무책임한 개인의 행동이 상황을 악화시키는 것을 보고 있다.
The first patient in Korea -- a 68-year-old man diagnosed with MERS on May 20 -- concealed the fact that he had traveled to three Middle East countries， including Saudi Arabia， in April when he saw medical doctors at four hospitals. A woman in her 50s， who was supposed to be under quarantine at home in Seoul， went with a group of 10 acquaintances to play golf in a provincial town this week.
5월 20일 메르스 진단을 받은 첫 번째 메르스 환자(68， 남)는 4월 4개 병원에서 의사들에게 사우디아라비아 등 중동 3개국을 여행했다는 사실을 숨겼다. 서울의 자택에서 자가격리를 하고 있었어야 할 50대 여성은 이번 주 지방에 10명의 지인들과 골프를 치러 갔다.

A 44-year-old man， a son of the third person infected with the virus in Korea， ignored the advice of doctors to stay at home and flew to Hong Kong from Seoul last week. The man， who subsequently traveled to a city in the nearby Chinese province of Guangdong， is now on a respirator at a local hospital.
3번 환자의 아들인 44세 남성은 집에 있으라는 의사들의 권고를 무시하고 지난 주 홍콩으로 갔다. 그는 그 후 중국 관둥성으로 갔고 현재 현지 병원에서 인공 호흡기를 달고 있다.
