장기이식의 윤리학

Organ transplantation is one of the greatest eclats modern medicine has ever achieved. It has brought hope to millions of patients suffering from previously fatal organ failure. Struggling to contain costs, health-care payers are also among its beneficiaries. Kidney transplantation, for example, has proved less costly than dialysis.

장기이식은 현대 의학의 가장 큰 성과 중 하나이다. 장기이식 덕분에, 종전 같았으면 치명적인 장기부전으로 고통 받았을 수백만 명의 환자들이 희망을 얻게 되었다. 의료비용으로 고통 받던 환자들도 장기이식의 혜택을 받게 되었다. 장기이식은 신장 투석보다 더 저렴한 것으로 밝혀졌기 때문이다.

Yet, since its inception, transplant medicine has been grappling with a rapidly increasing gap between the *supply of organs and *demand for them. This gap has given rise to some exceptionally corrupt practices, such as organ trafficking, transplant tourism, and many other ugly phenomena associated with a black market in organs. It has also put transplant ethics under severe strain. Those in need of organs or money are increasingly likely to turn to the black market or seek a legal loophole.

Many of the pandemonium that we currently face are just symptoms. Yet the underlying problems must be addressed as well *if we *are to lead the kind of life that human beings deserve to have. The organ crisis is *no different. Instead of relying on principles of free market economics, we must direct our main efforts at draining the swamp. Organ transplantation, like mosquito repellent, should be used sparingly, and only when there is no other choice.
