After the 7.8-magnitude earthquake which struck close to the capital city Kathmandu devastated Nepal, the death toll has sharply jumped to at least 4,300 with 8,000 injured as of Tuesday afternoon, according to disaster management officials.

The number of casualties from earthquakes across the world has been very high during the past two decades. The deadliest earthquake prior to the latest incident was a 7.0-magnitude quake which rocked Haiti in 2010, taking 316,000 lives. A massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia in 2004, which triggered a tsunami, caused 227,898 deaths, making it the second deadliest earthquake. An 8.0-magnitude quake devastated China’s southwest province of Sichuan in 2008 leaving 87,587 people dead or missing.

The following graphic also depicts the death tolls from earthquakes in Pakistan in 2005, Iran in 1990 and 2003, India in 2001 and Turkey in 1999.
