City supports bonding bewteen fathers and children

Seven pairs of fathers and children pile up colorful sand in glass bottles at a public child care center on a Saturday in Seocho-gu, southern Seoul.
Laughter fills the room as the dads help the kids finish their masterpieces.
Clutching the sand-filled bottle in one hand as a souvenir, and holding the father’s hand in the other, the children return home beaming.
This simple activity class is a part of the district’s program designed to encourage bonding between fathers and children.
It is a precious opportunity to “learn” how to become good parents.
The curriculum of the weekly class ranges from dance and art to physical activities.
“Fathers can learn how to play with their children at home and how to communicate with them. As long as the parents know the methods, they can contribute a lot to child care,” said program coordinator Park Hye-mi at Seocho-gu Office.
Joo Dan-ha, a 33-year-old office worker who raises his 4-year-old daughter and six-month toddler, is one of the fathers in the class. He found out about the program through advertisements.
“When playing with my kids, I try to apply what I have learned in class. I can see how I have changed after attending the class,” Joo said.
To make classes more convenient for working fathers, district offices carry out the classes only on Saturdays.
Seongbuk-gu Office in the northern capital runs ice-skating classes from last year. Guro-gu Office in southwestern Seoul launched a baseball team comprised of children and fathers in 2010.
Besides independent programs by districts, the city government offers diverse programs to teach child care in general.

서울시, 아빠와 아이의 유대감 형성 지원

어느 토요일 서초구 구립 어린이집에 7쌍의 아빠와 아이가 함께 유리병에 색모래를 차곡차곡 넣고 있다.
아빠가 아이의 작품 제작을 도우면서 방에는 웃음꽃이 피어난다.
색모래로 가득찬 병을 기념으로 가지게 된 아이들은 한 손으로 그 병을, 다른 손으로는 아빠의 손을 잡고 활짝 웃는 얼굴로 집으로 돌아간다.
이처럼 간단한 활동으로 이루어진 이 수업은 아빠와 아이의 유대감을 북돋우려는 구청 프로그램의 일부다.
이 수업은 좋은 부모가 되는 방법을 ‘배우는’ 소중한 기회이기도 하다.
주 1회 열리는 이 수업은 춤, 미술, 체육 등의 과목으로 구성돼 있다.
서초구 박혜미 프로그램 진행자는 ”(이 수업에 참가하는) 아빠는 집에서 아이와 노는 법, 아이와 소통하는 법을 배울 수 있다. 부모가 그 방법을 터득하면 아이를 돌보는 데 큰 도움을 받을 수 있다“고 말했다.
4살 된 딸과 6개월 된 아이를 둔 33살 직장인 주단하씨는 이 수업에 참가한 아빠 중 한 명이다. 그는 광고를 보고 이 수업이 있다는 것을 알았다.
주씨는 ”아이들과 놀 때 수업에서 배운 것을 써보려고 노력한다. 나는 이 수업에 참가하고 나서 내가 변한 것을 알았다“고 말했다.
구청은 일하는 아빠들이 이 수업에 보다 편하게 참가할 수 있도록 토요일에만 수업을 진행하고 있다.
성북구는 지난 해부터 스케이팅반을 운영하고 구로구는 2010년 아빠와 아이로 구성된 야구팀을 창단했다.
구청 자체 프로그램 이외에 시청은 나름대로 전반적인 육아에 대해 가르치는 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 있다.
