North Korea on Wednesday slammed a United Nations move to adopt a resolution on the communist country's human rights violations, denouncing it as an intolerable political provocation.

Representatives of the European Union and Japan tabled the resolution to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva last week, calling for measures on the communist country's dire human rights abuses.

The U.N. council is expected to put the resolution to a vote later this week.

"Fabricating the North Korea human rights resolution again amounts to an intolerable political provocation against us and a foolish, evil act to stir confrontation," the North's key propaganda website, Uriminzokkiri, said.

The resolution is full of insults and provocative words against North Korea and "it is not a secret that the move is led under pressure and manipulation of the U.S.," the website noted.

The international community is ramping up pressure on the communist country over its human rights condition.

The U.N. General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution in December, calling on the Security Council for the first time to refer the North Korean human rights situation to the International Criminal Court.

The North has strongly denied such rights abuse accusations, saying it is driven by a U.S. plot to topple its regime. (Yonhap)
