The average gender wage gap in the nation’s top 500 companies stood at 26 million won, according to data released Wednesday.

According to research firm CEO Score, the average annual salary for male employees was 72.5 million won, and 44 million won for females.

This means that male employees earn 2.2 million won more than females per month.

The banking industry has the largest wage gap as male workers earned 99.4 million won on average and female employees earned 44.7 million won.

Experts said that this was due to the fact that male employees remain longer at work on average, and because female employment is more concentrated among lower positions.
