South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has started mass production of an upgraded flash memory chip for smartphones with a high speed and a high capacity, which will help mobile devices run more stable.

Samsung claimed that the 128GB Universal Flash Storage for smartphones is an industry first, and is faster and slimmer, and consumes less power compared with previous flash memory chips. The company said it will also roll out 32GB and 64GB versions.

Samsung said the UFS lineup has adopted "Command Queue" technology, which accelerates the speed of command executions, making it work 2.7 times faster than previous high-end embedded MultiMedia Card 5.0 products.

The new flash storage can also be applied to the ePoP (Embedded Package on Package), which stacks a number of different smartphone parts together, enabling thinner handsets with bigger batteries, Samsung said. Mass production of ePoP also started earlier this month.

Along with the UFS lineup, Samsung added it will commence the mass production of the latest eMMC 5.1, which is 50 percent faster than the previous eMMC 5.0, to meet the various demands of the mobile industry. (Yonhap)
