LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's No. 2 smartphone maker, said Wednesday it will launch its latest curved-design handset in overseas markets from March, starting in the United States.

The G Flex 2, debuted locally in late January, is the upgraded version of LG's premium lineup in curved smartphones whose display bends inward. It comes in a smaller 5.5-inch size compared with the 6-inch predecessor.

The new handset will be available from March 1 in the U.S. through Sprint Corp. before hitting the local shelves in Asia and Europe, LG said in a statement.

"We will kick off targeting global markets with the design and functions (of the G Flex 2) that have outdone its preceding model. We're ready to outperform as the predecessor has drawn a positive worldwide response," said Cho Jun-ho, the head of the Mobile Communications Division.

LG had released the original G Flex, bent from top to bottom, in November 2013, as the world's first curved smartphone.

The G Flex 2 sports features that would appeal more to younger generations who use smartphones to take selfies. Its Gesture Shot allows them to set a three-second timer by making a fist at the camera.

It also touts a Self Healing function, by which the smartphone will "heal" any scratches made on the back casing in about 10 seconds through its unique anti-coating.

The latest curved model, weighing 152 grams, is powered by Google Inc.'s Android 5.0.0 Lollipop and installed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. (Yonhap)
