South Korea ranked seventh in terms of science and technology capabilities among the members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2014, the country's ICT ministry said Tuesday, moving a notch up from a year earlier.

The country won 12.539 points in the Composite Science Technology Innovation Index (COSTII), hovering above the OECD average of 10.288, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said, citing the research conducted by the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning.

The scores are calculated by examining 31 different categories covering such areas as overall research environment, support given by both the public and private sectors and quality of work carried out by scientists and engineers.

South Korea conducted the study on 30 OECD member countries, while Chile, Israel, Slovenia and Estonia were excluded due to a lack of liable data.

The United States topped the list, trailed by Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. Ireland, Finland and Denmark also made it onto the top 10 list, the research showed. (Yonhap)
