The Supreme Court has reaffirmed the five-year jail term of a 19-year-old mother who murdered a one-month old infant and placed him in a freezer, court officials said Wednesday.

The defendant, surnamed Park, was found guilty of strangling the baby boy and putting his body in the freezer with her 20-year-old boyfriend, surnamed Seol, they said.

The couple then abandoned the body in a roadside drain in the southeastern port city of Busan, they said. The two avoided a police manhunt for nearly a month before being arrested.

A lower court initially sentenced Seol and Park to 15 and nine years behind bars, respectively, saying that they should be severely punished despite their young age.

An appeals court, however, commuted the jail terms of the two to nine and five years, respectively.

Seol's prison term was confirmed earlier as neither the prosecution nor the defendant filed an appeal. (Yonhap)
