Cargo processed at South Korea's seaports grew in October from a year earlier on a rise in import-export cargo, the government said Wednesday.

The amount of cargo handled at South Korean seaports came to 118.88 million tons last month, up 4.7 percent from the same month in 2013, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Such an increase was largely attributed to a rise in import-export cargo, which gained 5.9 percent on-year to some 99.26 million tons.

Domestic cargo slipped 1.2 percent on-year to about 19.62 million tons, according to the ministry.

The trade ministry earlier said the country's overall exports rose 2.5 percent on-year to a record high of US$51.76 billion last month.

Container cargo processed at the country's seaports also rose 7.3 percent on-year to about 2.12 million twenty-foot-equivalent-units (TEUs) in October.

Import-export cargo grew 6.4 percent to nearly 1.27 million TEUs with transshipment cargo, cargo handled here while en route to a final destination, also growing 7.8 percent to some 833,000 TEUs.

The country's largest port in Busan processed some 1.61 million TEUs, up 9.9 percent from a year earlier.

In the first 10 months of the year, container cargo processed at the Busan port rose 5.1 percent on-year to about 15.4 million TEUs, the world's sixth-largest volume, the ministry said. (Yonhap)
