Samsung Electronics loses market share in mobile phones, TVs

Samsung Electronics Co.'s global presence in mobile phones and high-end TVs declined in the third quarter while its market share in DRAMs and displays rose, industry data showed Sunday.

Analysis of quarterly reports released by the tech company showed Samsung's market share in the IT mobile sector dipping 1 percentage point to 23.9 percent in the July-September period compared to the first half of this year.

The numbers based on findings by Strategy Analytics, a global research and consulting firm, also showed that market share dropped 3 percentage points on an annual basis from last year's 26.8 percent.

The results come as Samsung has been losing ground, particularly in China, to cheaper rivals such as Xiaomi, Huawei and Lenovo.

Reflecting this, Samsung said in a conference call for investors in New York earlier this month that it plans to reduce the number of phone models in the future and streamline its product portfolio to help reduce costs.

In the consumer electronics field, Samsung's market share in TVs edged down to 23.9 percent in the third quarter from 24 percent in the January-June period. This is still higher than 21.6 percent tallied for the whole of last year, although the company's dominance is being challenged by Chinese rivals.

In the device solutions field, the company said its global market share in the DRAM sector reached 41.3 percent from 38.9 percent in the first half. This represents a 5 percentage point increase from the previous year.

Samsung has recently started mass production of 20-nano, 8-gigabit double data rate 4 server DRAMs and V-NAND products to help it to expand its lead in the market.

"At present pace, Samsung's DRAM market share will be on par with 41 percent tallied for 2012, a peak year for the company," an industry watcher predicted.

In the display division, corporate reports showed the company enjoying a 21.8 percent market share in the previous quarter, vis-a-vis 21.6 percent in the first half. The improvement comes after the company started expanding into ultra high-definition screens that are increasingly being used in products sold on the market.

The numbers for this year as a whole are higher than the 20.4 percent global market share in the display field posted by Samsung for the whole of last year, data showed. (Yonhap)
