BEIJING -- The health ministers of South Korea, China and Japan were poised to sign a joint statement this weekend on trilateral cooperation to help fight the deadly Ebola virus, a Seoul diplomat said Saturday.

The joint statement will be announced after a three-way meeting of the ministers due on Sunday in Beijing, the diplomat at the South Korean embassy said on the condition of anonymity.

South Korean Health Minister Moon Hyong-pyo and his Chinese and Japanese counterparts, Li Bin and Yasuhisa Shiozaki, will hold talks to discuss ways of boosting cooperation among the three to jointly tackle health-related issues, such as aging, diseases and health care.

"A separate joint communique on the three nations' response to the Ebola epidemic will be signed after the Sunday meeting," the diplomat said, without elaborating on details of the joint statement.

More than 5,000 people have died from Ebola since the world's worst outbreak of the virus began nearly a year ago.

South Korea has been preparing to dispatch an Ebola treatment team to Sierra Leone, where Britain is currently building a large-scale Ebola treatment center. (Yonhap)
