South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. dominated more than half of the global market for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips in the third quarter this year, data showed Friday, apparently helped by the resumption of its supply to Apple Inc. 

Samsung's revenue in mobile DRAM products came to US$1.75 billion in the July-September period, up 18.4 percent from the second quarter, the data compiled by industry tracker DRAMeXchange showed, expanding its market share to 50.7 percent from 45.4 percent in the April-June period.

The growth came as Samsung resumed its supply of 20-nano level mobile DRAM products to Apple's latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 6. The U.S. firm had resorted to SK hynix Inc. and Micron Technology Inc. for the chips in the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

Samsung's resumed supplying to Apple after the two agreed to end ongoing patent lawsuits outside of the United States. Samsung and Apple have been engaged in legal wrangling in the U.S. and abroad since April 2011, accusing each other of copying patented technologies in their smart devices.

SK hynix Inc., on the other hand, saw its sales fall 2.5 percent over the cited period to account for 27.6 percent of the global mobile DRAM market in the third quarter.

By country, South Korean firms accounted for 78.4 percent of the global mobile DRAM market, followed by the U.S. with 19 percent and Taiwan with 2.6 percent, the data showed. (Yonhap)
