GM Korea, the South Korean unit of U.S. auto giant General Motors Co., on Monday readjusted fuel economy figures for its Cruze compact following its admission that the previously claimed gas mileage did not meet updated government testing rules.

The company said it has downgraded the fuel economy for its 1.8-liter Cruze sedan from 12.4 kilometers per liter of fuel to 11.3 kpl. For the hatchback, the mileage numbers were lowered to 11.1 kpl from 12.4 kpl. “The changes do not in any way affect the safety of the car,” it stressed.

GM Korea said it sold some 82,000 vehicles that are affected by the latest decision.

It announced last week monetary compensation of up to 431,000 won ($400) for people who bought the car. The money aims to cover the difference between the previously stated and revised fuel economy, as well as compensate for any inconvenience this discrepancy may have caused drivers in the past five years.

The company said it set up a website ― www.chevrolet.co.kr/compensation-index.gm ― to handle the compensation process.

The car is currently sold under the Chevrolet badge and was called the Lacetti Premiere before March 2011. (Yonhap)
