South Korea's Cabinet is likely to approve bills extending the country's troop deployment in Sudan and Lebanon by another year, an official said Tuesday.

The move, if endorsed by the parliament, will allow South Korean troops to carry out their missions until the end of 2015, the official said. Currently, their missions are set to expire Dec. 31.

Last year, South Korea deployed about 270 troops, mostly engineers and medics, to South Sudan under the wing of the United Nations Mission to help the newly independent African nation's rebuilding efforts.

Separately, about 300 South Korean soldiers have been stationed in Lebanon since 2007 as part of the U.N. interim forces' efforts to oversee a cease-fire and set up a buffer zone between Lebanon and Israel.

South Korean troops carry out surveillance and patrol missions, and provide humanitarian support and medical services to help local troops and residents.

In September, the Cabinet also endorsed bills extending the country's troop deployment in the Gulf of Aden and the United Arab Emirates by another year.

South Korea has deployed a naval unit aboard a 4,500-ton destroyer in the Gulf of Aden since 2009 as part of global efforts to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.

About 150 South Korean soldiers have been stationed in the eastern region of the UAE, tasked with training the Middle Eastern nation's special operations forces.

Also Tuesday, the Cabinet is likely to approve a bill calling for raising the resident tax to up to 20,000 won (US$19) from an average of 4,260 won, the official said.

Another bill that could also get parliamentary blessing calls for raising taxes for vehicles used for business purposes by 100 percent. (Yonhap)
