South Korean cable-maker LSIS said it had secured a global safety-related certification for its newly developed system for controlling unmanned trains, dubbed the Korean radio-based train control system.

The cable-maker said the KRTCS had been awarded the international safety and reliability certification Safety Integrity Level 4, the highest safety grade in the railroad sector, from Lloyds Register Rail of the U.K. for the first time in Korea.

The SIL certification confirms the electronic, electrical and signal safety and reliability of industrial equipment such as railroads, automobiles, oil and gas plants, and medical devices, the company said.

The KRTCS is designed to remotely control the movement of trains ― departures and stops, and also the intervals between trains ― to support the unmanned operation of trains.

With the technology, LSIS has become the first company in Korea to develop both on-train and on-the-ground systems for train signal control, the firm said.

The company has acquired SIL4 certification for both systems, confirming its reputation as the country’s leader in train signal control technologies, industry watchers said.
