Samsung Electronics Co. said Wednesday it has successfully conducted tests on the fifth-generation (5G) network capable of transmitting 150 megabytes of data per second in a vehicle travelling at over 100 kilometers per hour.

"It marked the first time for 5G network technology to boast speeds at gigabit-per-second (Gbps)-level in an actual mobile environment, and not in a lab," the company said in a press release.

Samsung added the technology also boasted speeds of 7.5 Gbps in a stationary environment, which translates into a data transmission of 940 megabytes per second, about 30 times faster than the fourth-generation (4G) network.

Industry watchers said the 5G network technology is anticipated to allow users to enjoy even Ultra HD content on their mobile devices on a real-time basis, adding it will further bolster the growth of the smart device market.

The company added it hopes to propose a so-called 5G Rainbow to other industry players. The terms refers to the seven core technical pillars of 5G technology, and help steer the overall direction of development.

"These pillars are maximum data rate, spectral efficiency, speed of mobility, and data transmission rate at the cell boundary, the number of simultaneous connections, communication delays, and cost," Samsung said.

"Whether you are talking about mobile devices, the cloud, or the Internet of Things, the demand for 5G telecommunications standards and its supporting technologies will continue to grow,"
said Kim Chang-yeong, who heads Samsung's research center. (Yonhap)
