[Asian Games] South Korea wins 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze in women's modern pentathlon

The South Korean women's team claimed the modern pentathlon title at the Asian Games on Thursday, bringing home the country's first Asiad gold ever in this event.

   The quartet of Choi Min-ji, Jeong Mi-na, Kim Sun-woo and Yang Soo-jin accrued 5,120 points combined to capture the gold medal in fencing, swimming, horse riding and a combined event of shooting and running at Dream Park Modern Pentathlon Venue in the country's western port city of Incheon.

   The Japanese team of Itani Atsuko, Kurosu Narumi, Shimau Rena and Yamanaka Shino was a distant second with 4,760 points and China, with members Bian Yufei, Chen Qian, Liang Wanxia and Wang Wei, earned an aggregate 4,722 points to pick up bronze.

   The 26-year-old Yang contributed the most to the victory by earning 1,312 points, which also gave her the individual silver after China's Chen by a margin of 36 points. South Korea's Choi also added a bronze medal of her own after scoring 1,298 points.

   It is South Korea's first ever Asiad gold in this women's event comprised of contemporary sports. At the 2010 Guangzhou games, it was defeated by China to settle for silver. (Yonhap)
