A new trend: Taking selfies in front of memorial sites

Controversy sparked over an American girl who took a smiling selfie at Auschwitz. But it’s not only Auschwitz — more and more people are taking selfies in front of memorial sites, like the World Trade Center, making funny faces, according to the Daily Mail. 

The girl who took a smiling selfie at Auschwitz said that she doesn’t regret what she did because she took the picture in memory of her dead father who taught her about Auschwitz. 

Not everyone might have a reason for taking a selfie like the girl above but “selfie cases” like this have increased recently. And with this increase, opinions that it’s rude to “treat” the dead in this way are rising as well. Even President Obama was criticized for taking a selfie with prime ministers at the memorial of Nelson Mandela. 

The World Trade Center is another favorite place for “selfie takers.” It’s not banned to take photos. Sometimes it’s even encouraged to upload memorial photos with the hashtag #9/11memorial. But there are guidelines that remind visitors that this site is a memorial for the lost innocent lives. 

“It’s fine to take photos at memorial sites as long as they are taken respectfully. But taking pictures while making a duck face or sticking out your tongue, wouldn’t be really considered as appropriate.” said the Emily Post foundation, a company which “offers advice on etiquette.”
