BEIJING (Yonhap) ― China said Tuesday that it supports a decision by North Korea to send a cheering squad to the coming Asian Games in South Korea, urging both Seoul and Pyongyang to make “joint efforts” to promote peace and stability in the region.

North Korea announced Monday it will dispatch the squad to the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Asian Games, while offering a fresh proposal for improved ties with South Korea. Seoul officials say they will make preparations to host the North Korean squad.

“China always supports the improvement of the relationship between North Korea and South Korea through dialogue and consultation so as to realize reconciliation and cooperation,”

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters during a regular press briefing, when asked about the North’s Monday announcement.

“China is committed to the denuclearization, peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula,” Hong said. “We hope that the relevant parties can make joint efforts to safeguard regional peace and stability.”

North Korea made the surprise announcement after it conducted a series of short-range missile launches into the East Sea, drawing concern from South Korea and Japan.
