벨기에 러시아 제압, 16강 확정...H조 경우의 수는?

벨기에가 러시아를 제압하고 16강 진출에 성공했다.

23일 오전 1시(한국시간) 열린 2014 브라질월드컵 H조 조별리그 2차전 벨기에-러시아 맞대결에서 ‘에이스’ 에당 아자르가 환상적인 도움을 기록하며 벨기에를 구했다.

이날 후반 41분 역습 상황에서 에당 아자르는 페널티지역 좌측을 허물며 오리지에게 완벽한 패스를 연결시켰다. 오리지는 이 패스를 받아 정확하게 골로 연결시키며 벨기에의 승리를 이끌었다.

이로서 벨기에는 러시아를 1-0으로 물리치며 승점 6점을 기록, 월드컵 H조에서 제일 먼저 16강행을 확정했다.

이는 같은 조에 속한 대한민국에게 희소식이다.

이미 16강을 확정지은 벨기에가 대한민국과의 조별리그 마지막 경기에 힘을 다 쏟아 붓지 않을 것으로 예상되기 때문이다.

벨기에에 패한 러시아는 승점 1점에 머무르면서 한국 알제리전 결과에 촉각을 세울 수 밖에 없는 상황에 몰렸다.

오전 4시에 펼쳐질 한국과 알제리와의 경기에서 한국이 알제리를 제압하면 한국은 승점 4점을 챙기면서 16강 진출에 유리해진다. 반면 알제리는 승점 0점으로 남은 경기에 상관없이 16강 진출에 실패하게 된다.

이어지는 H조 3차전에서 러시아가 알제리를 이기고 한국이 벨기에에 패한다면 한국과 러시아는 골득실차로 16강 진출 여부를 결정짓게 된다.

Belgium defeats Russia to next round

Hours before South Korea would face Algeria in their second group match, Belgium broke a lackluster stalemate against Russia to score in the 88th minute, winning 1-0 on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro to see it through to the Round of 16.

Star midfielder Eden Hazard slipped forward Divock Origi a quick assist right in front of the goal to score the lone goal of the match.

It was the two teams’ fifth World Cup faceoff, the most recent being Belgium’s 3-2 win in 2002. With six points, Belgium sits at the top of Group H standings, followed by Algeria with three and South Korea and Russia with one apiece.

Belgium’s Dries Martens, who scored the match-winning second goal against Algeria last week, led the action from the beginning, taking the first attempt in the fourth minute as Belgium hardly gave Russia a chance with the ball throughout the first half.

Russia’s Denis Glushakov made a clean cross from the left to Aleksandr Kokorin near the end of the first half, but the forward headed the ball wide.

Mertens then restarted action three minutes into the second half with a clean cross into the box for Romelu Lukaku, who was slow to react and was later substituted in the 57th minute.

Russia warmed up in the second half as possession evened out. A few minutes later, Russia midfielder Denis Glushakov tried to slice a volley over Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but his shot went high.

Fifteen minutes in, Russia began to push its opponents into their own half, though few scoring opportunities came of it.

With just minutes before final whistle, Belgium’s Kevin Mirallas came close to scoring in the 84th minute with a free kick, which he fired past the wall toward the goal’s bottom left corner. Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was slow to react, and the ball crashed against the post.

Finally, Hazard slipped Origi a ball from the left in front of goal to win the game.

On June 26, Russia will face Algeria while Belgium faces South Korea for the final matches of Group H.
