“학생비자 발급해 준다더니…” 하루 20시간 성노예로

아직도 다수의 아시아 여성들이 학생비자 사기에 속아 호주 땅을 밟은 뒤 성매매 업소에서 노예와 같은 생활을 하고 있다고 시드니 모닝 헤럴드가 보도했다.

이 여성들은 주로 홍콩•태국인으로 길게는 하루 20시간 동안 성매매 뿐 아니라 마약판매까지 강요당한 것으로 알려졌다.

시드니 모닝 헤럴드는 성매매 관련 탐사취재를 한 결과 일부 여행사가 성매매 업소 관리자와 아시아 여성 사이에 브로커 역할을 하고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다고 전했다.

이 여행사들은 여성들에게 관광비자를 제공해 호주에 입국하게 한 뒤, 업소 주인을 소개시켜 주는 것으로 알려졌으며, 포주는 학생비자를 대신 발급해 주겠다며 아시아 여성들을 유인한다고 이 매체는 전했다.

또 성매매 업소 관리인들을 학생비자를 위해 영어학원을 다녀야 한다며 학원비 약 15,000달러와 비자 신청 비용을 빌려주고 자신의 업소에서 일을 해 갚을 것을 강요한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

수십 명의 여성들은 결국 포주의 꾐에 넘어가 학원 문턱에도 들어서지도 못한 채 성노예 생활을 하게 되는 것이다.

이름을 밝히지 않은 한 인신매매 관련 전문가는 “여행사들이 가지고 있는 합법적 이미지를 앞세워 범죄가 일어나고 있는 것 같다”고 말했다.

뉴사우스웨일스대학의 조사에 따르면 시드니에서 매춘업에 종사하는 여성중 절반 이상이 아시아 여성이고, 그 중 다수가 한국과 홍콩 여성인 것으로 나타나 충격을 더하고 있다.

시드니의 성매매 여성들은 고객들에게 필로폰을 판매하는 과정에서 마약 중독자로 전락하는 사례도 많으며, 서비스의 일부로 필로폰에 취한 여성을 예약할 수도 있다고 호주 언론은 전했다.

또 호주의 성매매 업계의 경쟁이 치열해지자 포주들이 더 많은 고객을 유치하기 위해 아시아 여성들을 심하게 압박하고 일부 업소에서는 시간당 요금이 부과되는 점을 이용, 보다 오래 업소에 머물도록 하기 위해 불법 마약이나 환각제인 엑스터시 사용을 고객에게 제안하는 곳도 있다고 전했다.

시민단체 브로솔 버스터스는 아시아 여성 중 일부는 자신이 성매매 업소에서 일하게 될 것을 알면서 호주에 입국하지만 그들이 상상하던 삶과는 상당히 동떨어진 생활을 하게 된다고 밝혔다.

브로솔 버스터스의 한 관계자는 “여성들은 자신이 매춘 산업에 뛰어들게 될 것을 알고 있다. 그러나 그들은 부유한 남성들에게 마사지를 해주고 돈을 많이 벌어 시드니의 좋은 날씨와 카페, 해변에서의 멋진 삶을 누릴 수 있을 것이라는 거짓에 속아 오는 것이다”라며 “하지만 그들이 얻는 것이라곤 하루 16시간 이상의 노동시간과 마약 중독, 성매매 업소의 침대 위에서 먹고 자는 것 그리고 억압된 자유뿐이다”라고 덧붙였다.

Asian women, many from South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand, are being lured to Australia in a student visa scam, and then sent to brothels to sell sex and drugs under slave-like conditions, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

A media investigation into sex trafficking in Sydney, found a number of Asian women arriving in the country on tourist visas obtained through travel agencies. The women are then met by brothel owners who apply for student visas on their behalf, telling them the process can at times take up to two years.

“Travel agencies are the perfect front. They have the semblance of legality and are probably registered in one way, but they do a lot more,” a human-trafficking expert who declined to be named told the media.

Many of the women are forced to work up to 20 hours a day as prostitutes and take crystal meth -- also known as ice -- with their clients, according to the Herald report.

Asian sex workers in Sydney are pressured to have unprotected oral sex amid intense industry competition. The sex workers opt to self-medicate with drugs imported from Hong Kong rather than visit the hospital.

According to Australian advocacy group Brothel Busters, some of the women are aware that they will be working in the sex industry, but under false pretenses.

“The women understand they would be working in the sex industry. They were told they would massage rich men, make lots of money and enjoy the Sydney lifestyle of beaches, cafes and great weather,” an official of the group said. “But what did they get? Sixteen-hour days, drug addiction, living and sleeping on mattresses in the brothel and restricted freedom.”
