한 여성이 시어머니를 잔인하게 살해한 혐의로 징역 41년을 선고 받았다고 지난 6일 영국 데일리 메일이 보도했다.
미국 콜로라도에 거주하는 20살 가해자 엘리자베스 레이니는 시어머니 데보라 레이니의 머리 위로 끓는 물을 부어 살해한 사실을 밝혔다. 레이니는 이에 그치지 않고 아령을 피해자의 머리에 던지고 표백제를 콧구멍 및 입안에 부어 넣었으며, 시어머니의 죽음을 확실시 하기 위해 칼로 복부, 심장, 목을 수 차례 찔렀다.
가해자는 시어머니의 시체를 매트리스 밑에 숨겨 범행 사실을 은닉하고자 했으나, 이웃주민의 소음 신고로 인해 출동한 경찰이 피 뭍은 칼을 부엌에서 발견하여 수포로 돌아갔다. 그녀는 경찰에게 자신의 갓난아기를 던지고 도주를 시도했지만 얼마 안가 붙잡혔다.
사건 관계자에 따르면 레이니는 평소 시어머니와 다툼이 잦았으며, 시어머니가 자신이 가진 모든 것을 빼앗을 것이라는 “목소리”에 시달려 범행 직전 병원 신세도 지었다고 전했다.
또한 레이니는 그녀의 남편 제이슨 레이니와의 관계도 원만치 못했으며, 이혼 절차를 밟기 직전이었다. 경찰은 레이니가 10살 때 조울증을 진단 받았으나 약을 복용하지 않았다고 말했다.

A woman in the United States who brutally murdered her mother-in-law has been sentenced to 41 years in prison, the Daily Mail reported on Sunday.
Ellyzabeth Rainey, a 20-year-old from Colorado, pled guilty to murdering her mother-in-law, Deborah Rainey, by pouring boiling water over her head at her own apartment. She then threw free weights at her, poured bleach into her mouth and stabbed her several times in the stomach, heart and throat to make sure she was dead.
Rainey concealed the body under an air mattress. But when the police visited her house due to a noise complaint by a neighbor, they saw a bloody butcher’s knife. She then threw her baby at them and tried to run away, but was arrested on the street.
According to investigators, Rainey often fought with her mother-in-law, and she was recently hospitalized for hallucinations. She claimed that “voices” told her that her mother-in-law would take everything away from her.
Her relationship with her husband, Jason Rainy, was not in a good place either. The police said that the couple was about to divorce. They also noted that she was diagnosed as bipolar at 10, but did not take any medication for the condition.
