LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Madison Bumgarner struck out 10 while working into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat Los Angeles 7-2 Saturday as Yasiel Puig returned to the starting lineup for the Dodgers.

Puig started in right field and batted leadoff a day after he was benched for arriving late for stretching and batting practice before opening day at Dodgers Stadium. He went 1 for 4, and was picked off first in the third inning for the final out with Adrian Gonzalez at bat.

Michael Morse had a solo homer in the fourth inning and the Giants got back-to-back homers in the fifth from Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey.

Bumgarner (1-0) was charged with two runs and hit hits in 6 1/3 innings and struck out 10 in his second outing.

Paul Maholm (0-1) gave up five runs and seven hits through 4 1/3 innings in his first start for the Dodgers.

Puig came up in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out after Giants skipper Bruce Bochy replaced Bumgarner with Santiago Casilla. Puig’s flyball to right field was too shallow to score Scott Van Slyke, but pinch-hitter Andre Ethier followed with an RBI single.

A.J. Ellis tried to score behind Van Slyke and was thrown out by Hunter Pence for the third out. Mattingly came out to discuss the call with umpire Joe West and used his one challenge for a video replay ruling, which upheld the original call. 

Rays edge Rangers on Loney double

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) ― James Loney hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 on Saturday night.

Loney lined an opposite-field drive off Neal Cotts (0-1) that went over left fielder Choo Shin-soo and put the Rays up 5-4. Brandon Gomes (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth before Grant Balfour got the final three outs for his first save. Yunel Escobar and Matt Joyce homered for the Rays. David Price gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Texas right-hander Nick Martinez allowed three runs and four hits over six innings in his major league debut.

Ike Davis hits walk-off grand slam

NEW YORK (AP) ― After a demoralizing start to the season where nothing seemed to go their way, the New York Mets are making all the right calls.

Pinch hitter Ike Davis hit a walkoff grand slam one batter after manager Terry Collins won his first replay challenge, and the Mets rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 Saturday.
